As I write this, I can’t help but chuckle at myself for three reasons.
First, my long-winded and quirky headline. Second, my modest (or is it misguided?) attempt at SEO optimization, knowing this article probably won’t surface in anyone’s search results. And third, my indecision about slapping “preneur” behind random words. Is it a legitimate business term, or am I just stroking my own ego?
Now that I’ve gotten those irrelevant insecurities out of the way, let’s talk about the year.
2024 is now firmly in the rearview mirror, disappearing over the horizon, and here we are, speeding into 2025 at what feels like 200 km/h.
Time really does fly, especially when life is busy.
And so, here I sit, taking a deep breath and attempting to organize my thoughts. As usual, my writings serve two purposes. One is for my boys—to give them a snapshot of my evolving thoughts as they grow older. The other is for myself. Writing is a personal record of how I’ve grown or shifted in perspective over the years.
Case in point: last year, I wrote about my son not making a sports team. The sting of it lingered for me much longer than it did for him. A few weeks later I reread that entry and found a strange kind of comfort in revisiting my thoughts from that day. Yes, it’s a little weird, but I suspect that’s what people mean by “self-development.”
Anyway, enough about that. Let’s dive into the actual topic:
The Frustrations of a Contentpreneur Turned AI-preneur (or Somewhere In-Between)
Still smiling to myself. But as always, thank you for your time and attention, and apologies if my behind-the-scenes ramblings distracted you.
What is a Contentpreneur?
For most of the last decade, I have been what you’d call a contentpreneur. My journey began during the golden age of blogging in the mid-2000s, a time when personal blogs were the social media. Back then, your audience left comments and read your posts like clockwork. “Likes” and retweets didn’t exist yet; engagement was measured by thoughtful conversations and direct feedback.
From blogging, my path naturally progressed into publishing books through Amazon’s KDP platform. My business partner and I dove into it headfirst, writing and publishing over 200 books. For a while, it was amazing. Some of our best work is still available on our publishing website.
But like all seasons, that phase didn’t exactly end—it evolved. Writing books turned into building websites, which led to crafting SEO-focused articles, running digital ad campaigns, creating online courses, and eventually operating a digital agency.
It was all built on one common thread: content.
Hence, I started identifying as a contentpreneur.
To define it more formally,
a contentpreneur is someone who uses content creation as the foundation of their business strategy. They build a brand or business by creating and distributing digital assets like blog posts, videos, and podcasts, often monetizing through advertising, affiliate marketing, subscriptions, or paid content.
Google AI helpfully confirms this definition, and for the most part, it’s spot on.
But that’s where my next phase comes in.
The Transition: From Contentpreneur to AI-preneur
If the 2010s were about content creation, the 2020s are shaping up to be the era of artificial intelligence. Over the last few years, I’ve found myself increasingly drawn to AI, not just as a tool but as a transformational platform.
Why? Because AI is everywhere now. It’s writing emails, generating video scripts, creating images, and even coding entire websites. For someone like me, who has spent a decade creating content manually, the potential of AI feels simultaneously thrilling and threatening.
The Thrill
AI offers speed and efficiency that I could only dream of a few years ago. Need a blog post? Done in minutes. Designing a website? AI tools can now build professional templates with minimal input. Even the mundane parts of the content creation process—like formatting, keyword research, and basic edits—are handled with ease.
This level of automation means I can focus more on strategy and creativity rather than getting bogged down in repetitive tasks.
The Threat
Of course, there’s the flip side. The rise of AI has also disrupted the very industries that contentpreneurs like me depend on. When anyone with access to ChatGPT, MidJourney, or similar tools can generate professional-grade content at a fraction of the cost, it raises an uncomfortable question:
What happens to the value of human creativity?
I’ve wrestled with this question a lot lately. The reality is, AI tools are rapidly commoditizing creative work. The barrier to entry has been obliterated. Where does that leave people like me, who built businesses on creating and curating content?
The Pivot
The answer, I’ve realized, lies not in resisting AI but in embracing it.
As a contentpreneur, I see AI not as a competitor but as a collaborator. It’s a tool that can amplify my capabilities, allowing me to work smarter, not harder. By integrating AI into my workflow, I can combine the best of both worlds: the speed and efficiency of machines with the nuance and authenticity of human creativity.
This is where the term “AI-preneur” comes into play.
An AI-preneur, as I define it, is someone who leverages AI technology to drive their business strategy. Instead of relying solely on traditional content creation methods, they incorporate AI to streamline processes, explore new opportunities, and scale their impact.
Challenges of Becoming an AI-preneur
The transition hasn’t been without its challenges. Here are some of the key frustrations I’ve encountered along the way:
1. Overcoming Resistance to Change
When you’ve spent years honing a craft, it’s not easy to suddenly hand parts of it over to a machine. There’s an emotional attachment to the old ways of doing things—a sense of pride in manual effort. Letting go of that mindset has been a journey in itself.
2. Learning New Tools
AI tools are powerful, but they also come with a steep learning curve. It’s not just about knowing what buttons to press; it’s about understanding how to get the most out of the technology. That has meant investing time and energy into learning platforms like ChatGPT, DALL-E, and others.
3. Standing Out in a Crowded Market
As AI democratizes content creation, the market is becoming increasingly saturated. The challenge now is to differentiate myself not by the volume of content I produce but by the value and insight I bring to the table.
4. Ethical Concerns
AI raises tough questions about originality, plagiarism, and fairness. How do I ensure that my work remains authentic in a world where so much is generated by machines? These are questions I continue to wrestle with.
The Way Forward
Despite the challenges, I’m optimistic about the future. Here’s how I’m approaching this new era:
- Focus on Strategy, Not Just Execution
AI can handle execution, but it still needs humans to provide direction. I’m focusing on high-level strategy—things like brand building, storytelling, and audience engagement. - Embrace Lifelong Learning
The AI landscape is evolving rapidly, and staying relevant means continuously learning and adapting. I’m investing time in understanding emerging technologies and figuring out how to incorporate them into my work. - Double Down on Authenticity
In a world flooded with AI-generated content, authenticity will be the ultimate differentiator. I’m committed to staying true to my voice and values, even as I integrate AI into my workflow. - Collaborate with AI, Don’t Compete
Rather than viewing AI as a threat, I’m treating it as a partner. By combining human creativity with machine efficiency, I can achieve outcomes that wouldn’t be possible with either alone.
Conclusion
The journey from contentpreneur to AI-preneur has been anything but straightforward. It’s been a mix of excitement, frustration, and endless curiosity. But as we speed into 2025, I’m reminded that evolution is the only constant. Whether it’s blogging, book publishing, or AI-driven content creation, the key is to keep moving forward.
If nothing else, this journey has taught me that adaptability is the ultimate superpower. And who knows? Maybe one day, my boys will read this and see that their dad didn’t just survive the AI revolution—he thrived in it.
Here’s to the future, one where humans and AI create something truly extraordinary together.
